Monroe doctrine- is the best known U.S. policy toward the Western Hemisphere. Buried in a routine annual message delivered to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823, the doctrine warns European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs.
Spanish American war-A war between Spain and the United States, fought in 1898. The war began as an intervention by the United States on behalf of Cuba.

panama canal-. Waterway across the Isthmus of Panama. The canal connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The United States built it from 1904 to 1914 on territory leased from Panama.
general Santa Anna- Mexican general who tried to crush the Texas revolt and who lost battles to Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War (1795-1876)
Benito Juarez- important Mexican liberal during the time of the U.S.-Mexican War, and emerged as one of the nation's most important figures in the Nineteenth Century. A Zapotec Indian from Oaxaca, Juárez was born into a peasant family in 1806.
Pancho Villa & Emiliano Zapata-was a Mexican Revolutionary general and one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican Revolution. Emiliano Zapata was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, the main leader of the peasant revolution in the state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo.
